…NRIC bill is the key to making Nigeria great again- Dr. Theophilus Ndubuaku
Professor Peter Azikiwe Onwualu, Co- Centre Leader of the Pan African Materials, Institute of African University of Science and Technology, Abuja, made
this remark on his key note address at the Strategic Meeting of Directors General/ Chief Executive Officers of Research and Development Institutions and the Leadership of ASURI held on Thursday, May 16, 2019 as a roundtable for the ” National Research and Innovation Council(NRIC’s) Establishment Bill 2019.
According to his speech, Research and Development are what propels any developed nation’s economy and that the missing link in Nigeria economy growth lies in not giving needed attentions to Research development institutions funding. He called on all stakeholders to come together and put all hands on deck to ensure that President Muhammadu Buhari gives assent to the NRIC bill as its the only bill with the tremendous potential to change the fortune of this nation.
” No developed economy can progress without embarking on research and development. As we continue neglecting research, we will continue being a dumping ground for other nation’s good and services, so I am calling all the stakeholders, those concerned to come together and put all hands on deck to ensure that Our President, Muhammadu Buhari gives assent to this NRIC bill. This bill is the only bill that can change the fortune of this nation”, he said.
Prof. Onwalu went further to emphasized that any research can partner with any university as when there is research, there must be those developing the research so there should be a synergy between the two.
Priorly, the National Secretary General of the Academic Staff Union of Research Institutions( ASURI), Dr. Theophilus Ndubuaku on his welcome address note, while thanking the 8th National Assembly for following up the inauguration with the passage of the NRIC bill, now waiting for the Mr. President assent, also thanked Nigeria Labour Congress( NLC), Trade Union Congress ( TUC) and United Labour Congress (ULC) as well Honourable Ministers and other members of the Technical Committee who seemed it deem to recommend establishment of a tax fund for funding research institutions because they recognised the importance of research in resolving the myriads of socio -economic problems confronting Nigeria.
Dr. Ndubuaku went further to add that with the necessary synergy with SON, NRIC has great potential to save the trillions of naira of scarce foreign exchange spent on importation and subsidy in the country. Then he called on CODRI and ASURI to form a synergy as the collaboration of the two will help to tidy up whatever needed to ensure Presidential assent to NRIC bill.
He made it known that the NRIC is the only bill with enough potential to reposition Nigeria back to its greatness.
” With the resuscitation of CODRI in progress, the support will assist ASURI in tidying up whatever is needed to ensure the Presidential assent to NRIC bill and immediate take of the council. Let me tell you, NRIC bill is the key to making Nigeria great again, so let’s join our hands together to achieve its assent”, he said.
Also present at the stakeholders meeting and forum are the representatives from NAFDAC, NBBRI, NBTI and other numerous Nigeria RDI’s who in their respective responses, pledged to assist in whatever way or ways to ensure the Presidential assent is obtained for the bill.
