Umuahia Union in Abuja holds cultural festival, Illustrious Sons And Daughters Bag Awards

The Umuahia indigenous community in Abuja at the weekend celebrated the 2018 Maiden Edition of the Town’s Cultural Day/Awards in Abuja.

According to the President General of the Union, Mazi Daniel Agwu, that this year’s edition was not only for showcasing their rich cultural heritages but to also recognised the illustrious sons and daughters who have in one way or others contributed to the development of the Umuahia community in Abuja.

” This year we decided to use this occasion to display the cultural dances, attires and food recipes peculiar to the various clans in Umuahia who have distinguished themselves in their various fields of endeavours, services to enlistment of their clans, Umuahia and humanity at large”. He remarked.

He added, that after deliberation he and his Exco members came to the idea of using the occasion to raise funds to finance their less privileged youths in Abuja towards skill acquisition and empowerment program for artisan trainings to make them not only employable but positioned for entrepreneurship enabled.

The colourful ceremony saw beautiful traditional dances, varieties of masquerades, exquisite Igbos costumes, jewelleries on parade, and different cultural food recipes from each clan of the Umuahia town, displayed at the City Park, venue of the event.

National Enquirer interview with some of the awardees, who apart from being humbled by the awards, gave insightful of their much cherished cultural heritages which boast rich traditional delicacies.

Speaking with the Former Federal Republic of Nigeria Ambassador to Democratic Republic of Congo, HE Diplomat (Dr) Grant Ehiobuoche, who was singlehandedly, nominated by the President General, for his immense contributions to social development of the community has this to say,
“We have rich culture, very ancient and well established. Activities today is to revive, uphold, sustain and transmit it to next generation. I am humbled being nominated by Dan Agwu (PG). I dedicate this award to him and my families here, who came to support me today”, Sir Grant said.

Also awarded, Federal Government College, Keffi, Bursar, from Ibeku clan, Mr. Estacy Ndudi, recognised for his service to the community in terms of time and finances.

” I have participated in so many things we have done, and I even spearheaded ‘Oghe-aghulo” displayed today. It a very good soup and we can never allow this rich food to be swept away. I am dedicating this award to ‘Egwu Asaa’ cultural dance Abuja branch, which I am a member”, he said.

The former President General of the union, Chief/Barr. Mathew Obiora Usuwa from Olokoro clan, signified his overwhelmed appreciation to what his successor has achieved and his ability to keep light shining.

” I am so glad that Mazi Agwu carried on from where I left, and I have strong conviction more will be coming from him and the Union. This gathering served in a way to unite all our people living here in Abuja. I am so impressed by the turn out and conduct of my people”, he stated.

Hon. Nze Esiaga, former Federal House of Representative who represented Ikwuano/ Umuahia Federal Constituency, seized the opportunity to dish out honour not only to late Engr. Patrick Festus Chukwuemeka Umekwe, who bagged ‘Post Humus Award’ for his pioneering efforts in forming the union in Abuja. He gave honour to Umuahia’s heroes past.

“I am using this opportunity to honour those gone and alive-: Engr. Umekwe, he contributed immensely to the development of Umuahia union here in Abuja.

He adds, “My presence here today, is to show how committed I am with what my people do and, I shall continue using my little position to keep flag flying, to make sure Umuahia people resident here in Abuja, stay united and, keep on remembering our roots.
We will never forget accomplishment of our towns notable sons-: MO Okpala, Premier of Eastern region, the first Nigeria military head of state Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi, Dr. JO Okezie, Hon. Odigbo, my predecessor who was the first Umuahia at the Federal House of Representatives, there before me and I was the second that served. They are illustrious sons from Umuahia”. Hon. Esiaga said.
