ADDRESS BY THE ACTING CHAIRMAN OF THE GOVERNING COUNCIL SAVE DEMOCRACY GROUP AFRICA, RT. HON GHALI UMAR NA’ABBA CFR AT THE UVEILING CEREMONY OF THE 2017 NATIONAL POLITICAL SUMMIT HELD AT STONEHEDGE ABUJA HOTELS, ABUJA ON THE 19TH DECEMBER, 2016.
I welcome you to this ceremony organized to formally unveil the 2017 Annual National Political Summit which is expected to hold between the 22nd and 25th January, 2017 in Abuja. The Annual National Political Summit, a flagship event of the Save Democracy Group Africa is gradually transforming to an important platform of all politicians, government, business and other stakeholders who are desirous of stabilizing our democracy and ensuring that culture of democracy is entrenched in our body politic. And I am happy that a lot of Nigerians are fully embracing democratic system as the preferred and better option for human development in this part of the world.
The journey to strengthening our democracy is not an easy one. The contending tendencies are many and therefore we must all try to continue the fight. Recent happenings in our political development especially the governorship elections in Edo and Ondo and the legislative elections in Rivers State have shown that it is not yet uhuru for our democracy. People still contest elections as if it is a war that must be won or perish. This is not the spirit of democratic practice and does not give good legacy that must be imbibed by other countries and by our children.
No doubt, Nigeria has made great successes in growing our democracy and consolidating on the gains of this successes will help us curb the many ills of our politics which include the lack of internal democracy, absence of ideological framework, lack of party discipline and inability of participants to develop positive political culture,
Because we have not got it all right, there is at all time the continuous call for political dialogue at any turn of event in Nigeria and it therefore behooves on us as a nation to continuously dialogue and to build on our past experiences to create a better nation. The political engineering of our nation should therefore be continuous and all democrats should be on board.
What we have done these past years is to provide that platform for all to dialogue in a very relaxed format and environment irrespective of our political affiliations. This helps to heal wounds of partisanship and generate nationalist spirit that may aid growth and development.
Our nation was built on dialogue between our founding fathers. We have fought a bitter war to remain one nation and have overcome many challenges as a nation. We must therefore live the dreams of our founding fathers, to leverage on our diversity, our population and our rich human and natural resource base, to build a strong and virile nation, and to become an African and world superpower. A nation founded on peace, justice and equity and where our children would achieve to the best of their ability without hindrance irrespective of their ethnicity or creed. This may not be achievable if we dwell too long on those things that divide us instead of those that unite us. We should be patriotic enough as political class to put a dividing line between period of politics and period of governance. All must join hands to build Nigeria once election is over.
This is what we promote and this is what we preach. Our first political summit was a very big success and am sure the 2017 will be better organized and more successful. Bringing this class of Nigerians to apoint for a number of days is not easy, but with determination and dedication of our members we are achieving great results. I thank the Main Organizing Committee (MOC) for the next year’s Summit for the wonderful work they are doing in packaging the Summit. I thank those of you who are here for the event. Unveiling is a media event, so I plead with my friends and brothers in the media to help promote this Summit. We may not meet your entire requirements especially under this recession but with the cordial relationship already existing between us, I am convinced you will help us.
We are equally calling on other organizations that have interest in promoting the tenets of democracy to join hands with us to properly institutionalize this programme. The two arms of the National Assembly – Senate and Federal House of Representatives have been wonderful in their support to us and I cannot appreciate them enough. We are indeed pleased with other partnering organizations and I pray God to reward all who are supporting our democratic process.
On Behalf of the Governing Council and indeed the entire members of the Save Democracy Group Africa, I thank you for coming and we wish you compliments of the season.
Rt Hon GhaliNa’Abba CFR
Ag.Chairman, Governing Council SDG-Africa.
